How to create a clickable WhatsApp link (with QR code)

MZMaurice ZayatHead of Growth at Settyn

A clickable WhatsApp link (also called a wa.me link or "click-to-chat") lets anyone open a conversation with you in a single click, without having to save your number. In this guide, you'll learn how to create a WhatsApp link in under 30 seconds, add a pre-filled message to it, turn it into a QR code, and place it where it actually generates conversations — and sales.

What is a WhatsApp link (wa.me)?

It's a URL like https://wa.me/33612345678 that opens a WhatsApp conversation directly with your number. wa.me is WhatsApp's official "click-to-chat" domain: on mobile it opens the app; on a computer it hands over to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. The person who clicks has nothing to do: no number to copy, no contact to create, zero friction.

You can also add a pre-filled message that automatically appears in the text box of whoever clicks. All they have to do is hit "send". That's the detail that turns your link from "convenient" into a conversation machine.

How do you create a clickable WhatsApp link?

The easiest way is to use our free WhatsApp link generator :

  • Pick your country and enter your number (the international format is built automatically).
  • Add a pre-filled message if you want (e.g. "Hi, I just came from your Instagram page").
  • Copy the generated link or download the QR code.

You get a link that's ready to share, like https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hello. You can also build it by hand: take https://wa.me/, paste your number in international format right after it, and optionally add ?text= followed by your encoded message. The tool does exactly that for you, with no risk of typos, and generates the QR code as a bonus. If your business targets several countries, create one link per market with the right country code: the international format guarantees the link works from anywhere in the world.

The number format: the rule that breaks everything

This is the number one mistake. The number must be in international format, without the "+", without spaces, without dashes, and without the leading 0. Concretely:

  • France: 06 12 34 56 78 becomes 33612345678 → https://wa.me/33612345678
  • Belgium: 0475 12 34 56 becomes 32475123456 → https://wa.me/32475123456
  • Switzerland: 079 123 45 67 becomes 41791234567 → https://wa.me/41791234567

One forgotten "+" or space, and the link shows an error or opens an empty conversation. Our tool does the conversion automatically based on the country code, so you don't even have to think about it.

Adding a pre-filled message (this is where it all happens)

The ?text= parameter pre-fills the person's message. Spaces and special characters must be encoded (%20 for a space, for example):

  • https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20more%20info%20about%20your%20offer

Why it's powerful: the person doesn't have to think about what to write (you remove the blank-page problem), and you instantly know where they came from. Use a different message per placement — "I found you through your Instagram bio", "I came from the website", "I scanned the QR code at the restaurant" — and you get mini channel tracking without any analytics tool. Keep the message short and in the first person: it's the person who clicks who sends it, not you. To find the right opener, pick from our WhatsApp message templates that sell.

How do you create a WhatsApp QR code?

A WhatsApp QR code is simply your wa.me link encoded as a QR: when scanned, the conversation opens, pre-filled message included. Our generator creates it at the same time as your link, ready to download. It's the perfect bridge between the physical world and WhatsApp: storefront, flyers, business cards, menus, packaging, trade-show booth… One camera tap and the chat starts, without the person having to type anything. Two tips to make sure it actually gets scanned: print it big enough, on a light background, and add a call-to-action line above it ("Scan me to book a table") — a QR code with no context invites nobody to pull out their phone.

Where should you place your WhatsApp link to generate conversations?

The placements that pay off the most:

  • Instagram or TikTok bio : the only clickable link on your profile — it might as well open a conversation.
  • Your website : as a "Chat with us on WhatsApp" button on the contact page or as a floating button.
  • Your stories : with the link sticker, to turn a story into private conversations.
  • Your ads : click-to-WhatsApp campaigns send the prospect straight into your inbox.
  • Your email signature : every email you send becomes an entry point.
  • Your physical materials : as a QR code on flyers, storefront, packaging, business cards.
  • Your Google Business Profile and your YouTube descriptions: anywhere a reader might have a question, give them the answer one click away.

The logic is always the same: bring the audience into the private conversation, because that's where the sale closes. We break down the whole method in our guide to selling on WhatsApp.

Concrete examples by profession

  • Coach or consultant : https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20know%20more%20about%20your%20coaching — in the Instagram bio, under every reel.
  • E-commerce : https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20have%20a%20question%20about%20a%20product — on product pages, to handle objections before the purchase.
  • Restaurant owner : https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20book%20a%20table — as a QR code on the storefront and front window.
  • Real estate : https://wa.me/33612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20am%20interested%20in%20your%20listing — under every published listing.

In every case, the pre-filled message already qualifies the request: you know why the person is messaging you before you even read their second message.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Putting the "+", spaces, or the leading 0 in the number: the link breaks.
  • A pre-filled message that's too long: one short sentence is enough — the person should be able to send it as is.
  • Not testing the link before sharing it: click it yourself from another phone.
  • Using a personal number: switch to WhatsApp Business to separate work and personal — we explain everything in our WhatsApp Business guide.
  • Generating clicks… and replying six hours later. A hot prospect cools down fast.

Is a wa.me link free?

Yes, completely. wa.me is an official WhatsApp service: no account to create, no click limit, no expiration. Our generator (link + QR code) is free too. So you can create as many as you want — one per channel, one per campaign — without ever paying anything.

wa.me or api.whatsapp.com: what's the difference?

None for the person who clicks. https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=33612345678 is the older long form, https://wa.me/33612345678 the official short form. Both open the same conversation; go with wa.me — shorter and cleaner in a bio.

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The link points to a number, not to an app: if your number is on WhatsApp Business, the conversation opens there, and you also get the catalog, quick replies, and the business profile.

And after the click? The real challenge begins

Generating the link is the easy part. The real challenge is what happens next: every click is a hot prospect, and replying fast dramatically improves your chances of closing — while a message that sits for hours often ends up as "seen". That's exactly what Settyn does: the AI replies to your WhatsApp messages in under 30 seconds, 24/7, qualifies every prospect, and books appointments for you, through the official Meta APIs.
